“I'M DONE WITH this,” Shepherd said when they had left the building and were outside on the sidewalk. “I don't like being lied to.”

“I didn't lie to you.”

“You didn't tell me the truth either.”

“Claire didn't tell you the truth. That's different.”

“How exactly is that different?”

Tay wasn't certain it was different, so he said nothing and tried to look enigmatic.

It began to rain then, a light mist that seemed to be less falling rain than moisture squeezing out of the humid air and trying to escape.

“I've got a hotel car waiting.” Tay pointed at the big Mercedes hovering in a parking zone about fifty yards away. “I'll drop you off.”

“That's not necessary. My office isn't very far.”

It rained harder. Big fat drops plopping onto the sidewalk and making hollow thunking sounds like big globs of spit.

“For Christ's sake, Shepherd, get in the fucking car before we both get soaked.”

Without waiting for an answer, Tay jogged toward the car. After a moment of hesitation, Shepherd followed.
